Chapter I[]
Climb
Climb up any surface, like a nearby rockface, by jumping via Spacebar at the rock and pressing Spacebar
again.
“ | You finish climbing and smile grimly to yourself. No matter what comes your way, you can at least try to climb away from it. | „ |
Drink
Near to where you start there is a Sealed Waterskin. Pick it up with E
and use it from your action bar to drink. If you didn't find that, you can drink Water directly when you reach the river.
“ | Despite your wounds and the abuse that your body had received while on the cross, you managed to find and drink some water. The battle for survival in the Exiled Lands will be a long one, but in this skirmish, you are the victor. | „ |
Eat
Use your action button E on a bush a few times and you will collect some
Handful of Insects. Not pleasant, but they are edible.
“ | You barely remember whatever it was that you ate. It doesn't matter. What matters is that the pain in your stomach has receded. For now. Hunger is truly the best sauce. | „ |
Use a bed or bedroll
Make a Fiber Bedroll or
Rawhide Bedroll in your inventory and then place it on the ground.
“ | Your mind feels refreshed and restored, despite the aching in your muscles. The insights that your dreams provide and the primal vitality that sleep restores will all be important in the days and weeks ahead. | „ |
Clothe yourself
Use your action button E on a bunch of bushes to harvest
Plant Fiber. You can craft this in your inventory to make a
Coarse Tunic,
Coarse Handwraps,
Coarse Leggings and
Coarse Footwraps.
“ | Coarse clothing offers very little protection against fang or claw, but it does provide a measure of relief against the burning sun. You wove yourself some rudimentary clothing from the strands of fibrous plants and ensured your ongoing survival just a little longer. | „ |
Slay!
This one is simple - kill something! There are some fairly easy creatures as you leave the desert, near the river, that you can kill with something as simple as a Stone Pick. Equipping yourself with a
Stone Sword or
Stone Club is preferable though but requires level 4 and the Warrior feat.
“ | Blood drips. Your fists ache. But for now, the fire of your anger has dimmed. Your future looms before you and it is blood, death and the endless cycle of survival. Probably a good idea to get a weapon. | „ |
Craft a tool
Grab a few Branches and
Stones off the floor and you can craft a
Stone Pick in your inventory.
“ | You smile grimly and bounce your tool against the palm of your hand. There is something beautiful about the act of creation. There is something even more beautiful about using your creation to smash something. | „ |
Find signs of intelligent life
There are various places you can complete this - usually by interacting with a written message or strange runed obelisk. The easiest is the Scrawled Note near where you spawn.
“ | It doesn't matter that whoever left that note is long gone. It is enough to know that others have passed this way in the past and, gods willing, will again in the future. You are an exile, but you are not alone. | „ |
Kick
Simply press the Ctrl button. You don't even have to be in combat at the time.
“ | You snap off a few air kicks, feeling satisfied with the feeling as your leg hammers through the air, the weight of your body behind it. Beware the mighty kick! | „ |
Dodge
Press the left-Alt button to perform a roll.
“ | Your momentum carries you back to your feet and you smile, despite the pain. That felt good and you know it will be very useful. | „ |
Chapter II[]
Spend Knowledge Points
Press O to access the Feats page - you just need to select a feat and unlock it.
“ | It all starts to come back - pieces of knowledge fitting together in your mind to form a complete picture of how to make things. There's a certain pleasure to knowing things and knowing that no matter how injured your body, your mind will retain this information. | „ |
Get a dedicated weapon
Craft yourself a Stone Sword from
Branches,
Stones and
Twine.
“ | You give your new weapon a few swings and it moves through the air with a satisfying whoosh. You almost feel sorry for the next fool who tries to kill you. Almost. | „ |
Eat a filling meal
To start with you are probably surviving by eating Handful of Insects and
Desert Berries but to gain this journey step you need to eat some food that has been cooked. The easiest way to do this is with a
Campfire - put some
Wood and any kind of raw meat on it.
Wood is gained by hitting trees with a
Stone Hatchet.
“ | You smack your lips with relish. It has been so long since you have had to fight for your food, you'd forgotten what it was like. Never mind the taste of woodsmoke or the charred, overcooked meat. A good meal, hard earned, is a satisfaction all of its own. | „ |
Find shelter
You gain this by creating a building with walls and roof, but it can sometimes trigger from naturally occuring shelter, such as caves. Purchase the Apprentice Mason feat from the Construction page, enabling you to craft Sandstone building parts in your inventory. If you gain the
sheltered status effect this journey step is done.
“ | You now know at least one place that will be safe for you to be during a sandstorm. You might be trading the danger of the scouring sandstorm for the depths of a monster-filled cave or the dubious safety of hiding underwater, but nowhere in the Exiled Lands is a truly safe place. | „ |
Perform a Heavy Finisher with a weapon
As soon as you have an actual weapon, such as the Stone Sword you made above, you can use the heavy attack
four times in a row to activate the finisher. You don't need to be attacking anything.
“ | The last swing whips through the air with a satisfying whoosh. You're certain that the key to skillful combat is to chain together your attacks in a way that sets your foe up for that single, definitive blow. Woe be to your enemies. | „ |
Use a Torch
Make an Improvised Torch from
Branches and
Plant Fiber. Add it to your quickbar and use it.
“ | You know how to keep the darkness at bay, whenever it comes. If you have enough fuel to keep your torch burning, you'll always have at least one ally in the darkness. | „ |
Scout an Exile Camp
Look for one of the camps of npc Exiles, usually a large Bonfire with them sitting around it. Just get close enough to one and you will unlock this step. If you are not confident fighting yet, you can run away from them.
“ | You can only feel pity. Driven to the edge of desperation, the men and women you encountered were little more than animals themselves. They threw themselves at you and you were forced to take action. Is everything in the Exiled Lands hostile? | „ |
Store goods
Place something from your inventory into a Wooden Box or other type of box. These can be made by taking the Boxmaker feat from the
survival page.
“ | You're a little nervous about not carrying everything around with you, but you feel lighter, more agile and more ready to face the challenges of the desert with just a few things on your person. Besides that wooden box should keep your gear safe from would-be thieves. Unless they have access to metal or sorcery. | „ |
Create a home
You will likely trigger this when you are halfway to making yourself a building. Just unlock the Apprentice Mason feat and build a house/hut, starting with Sandstone Foundation.
“ | You've started to build something that provides shelter, protection from attacks and a place to keep your equipment. Now it just needs to be finished. | „ |
Block an attack
This journey step actually requires you to be fighting an opponent. You need a shield first. Both Wooden Shield and
Bone Shield are easy to make early on. Take the Defender feat from the
weapons page. Place the shield on your quick bar and activate it, as well as your weapon. When fighting an opponent, press and hold your block key Ctrl
. Shields are also frequently found on enemy bodies and in boxes/chests. If you don't feel like building your own shield you can simply wait until your enemies provide one for you.
“ | The bone-shaking blow was easily deflected back at the attacker, causing them to stagger and lose complete control. You made note of the opening, and the technique for future battles. As long as you can keep your shield in one piece. | „ |
Chapter III[]
We're getting a bit advanced now and there is an assumption that you have a base of some sort where you can build crafting tables.
Equip a piece of light armor
If you're lucky, you can just get a piece of light armor off another player. To do this yourself, you'll need to take the Armorer (recipe) feat from the Armor page, then build an Armorer's Bench where you can make the light armor you need, such as a Light Chestpiece. Note that crafting armor is a little odd in that you need to craft the padding first, then you can craft the actual armor from the padding.
“ | You like the feel of this new armor against your skin. You feel confident and protected. You're ready to take on anything. | „ |
Use a skinning dagger to skin an animal
To get an Skinning Knife, you need to unlock the Apprentice Butcher feat, then craft an Iron Skinning Knife on a Blacksmith's Bench. This is a bit advanced for chapter III, as you not only need the Blacksmith, but you will need Iron Bars as well.
“ | You sniff the air, then shrug. One of the better things about being exiled is that there aren't a lot of people around to smell you after you've skinned something. You wipe your dagger and put it carefully away. You're going to be doing a lot more of this. | „ |
Scout a Darfari camp
As for the exile camp in Chapter II, but Darfari are a different tribe found further North in the Desert areas. The map image here shows one of these camps.
“ | The Darfari were also wearing the bracelets which means they are probably also captured and trapped here. You wonder who has such power, that they could capture entire bands of Darfari and imprison them. Though the cannibal slaves are common enough in the cities of Shem, you suspect that these Darfari have never known the lash. | „ |
Obtain an iron bar
You may get lucky and loot an Iron Bar from an NPC you killed, or from a chest. If you're playing with others, you can all unlock this journey step from a single bar. Most likely you'll need to make the iron bar yourself. To do this you'll need to unlock the Blacksmith (recipe) feat from the survival page, then build and place a Furnace. Place some Ironstone and fuel (Wood or Coal) into the furnace and start it up to make the iron bar(s). Note that you'll need to travel North of the starting River zone to find ore nodes to mine and will need a Stone Pick to hit them with.
“ | You have an iron bar and taken your first tottering step on the path that leads out of the age of stone. Now you just need a few hundred more. | „ |
Find somebody to talk to
Other players don't count for this! There are a number of neutral npcs on the map that you can talk to, to unlock this journey step. The first one available to you is called Arcos the Wanderer and is wandering around a campfire at The Sentinels (the big statues on the river in the starting area).
“ | You finally found somebody who was willing to talk to you. It's good to know that not everybody wants to kill you when they see you. Just most of them. | „ |
Shoot an enemy
You'll want either Javelin, or a Bow and some Arrows for this. The Archer feat can be taken from level 5 onwards and both Hunting Bow and Bone Arrows/Flinthead Arrows can be created in your inventory. Once you have a bow and some arrows, you must drag the arrows onto the bow, in your inventory, before equipping the bow.
“ | You took a moment to become used to the flight of the arrow but once it was under control, you shot your first enemy. Though the bow might not be useful against very fast creatures, you can see that it will give you a decided advantage when attacking from ambush. | „ |
Venerate the gods
You remember when you selected a Religion to follow in character creation? This is the point where you hope that you didn't select Crom. To unlock this journey step, you need to build and place a shrine to a God. If you did choose Crom, don't worry, it's possible to find neutral npcs that will teach you additional religions.
“ | You used an altar and saw immediately that there were things that you could create only with divine inspiration. Perhaps something to make use of in the future. | „ |
Get a Head
Chop up creature bodies with a Hatchet or a Pick. Heads have a low chance to drop with any tool (and possibly weapons) but these two have the highest (though still low) chance.
Note: Skulls from humans also count as heads for this journey step.
“ | You have taken a head. It is oozing and smells badly and you're not sure if you can remember how to stuff and preserve it. But you have it. You're so lonely. | „ |
Throw an Orb
Loot enough npcs and chests and you'll find a Gaseous Orb, Grease Orb, or possibly Demon-fire Orb. Equip it on your quick bar, select it like a weapon and then right-click to throw it. Done! These orbs can also be crafted at a Firebowl Cauldron.
“ | With the shattering of glass and the accompanying reaction, you've found a new weapon. Good for removing walls, choking enemies, and making everybody fall down. | „ |
Use a pick to gather bark from trees
You've almost certainly made a Stone Pick by now to gather Stone and Ironstone. You probably have a Stone Hatchet to chop trees with for Wood. However, if you hit a tree with your pick, you'll occasionally get Bark as well. It's mostly useful for fuelling the Tanner and Dryer.
“ | You've figured it out and managed to gather some bark. Now you'll just have to experiment to see which other tools you can use for varying purposes. | „ |
Chapter IV[]
Put an Enemy in the Wheel of Pain
Time to learn how to capture NPCs and turn them into your thralls (make them work for you)! You'll need to unlock the Thrall Taker feat. Now build a Lesser Wheel of Pain at your base and craft yourself a Truncheon and Fiber Bindings - place these on your quickbar for easy access. Find yourself an npc exile - they can be found at various camps across the map - attack them with the Truncheon and, instead of killing them, you will knock them unconscious. Now activate the Fiber Bindings as your active weapon and press the E key while looking at the unconscious npc - you'll attach them to the rope and you can now drag them back to your base. Beware that the Fiber Bindings have fairly low durability, but you can repair it (or carry more than one). Once you get back to your Lesser Wheel of Pain, look at the wheel and press the E key again to place the unconscious npc onto the wheel. This should unlock this journey step! Note - to successfully en-thrall the npc, you need to power the wheel of pain with some sort of food and activate it. People often use Gruel for this.
“ | You've captured your first thrall and put them on the Wheel of Pain. Over time, you realize, that you could create an army of willing servants. But all people are born with different skills and you will need to find the right thralls in order to quickly increase your production. | „ |
Sleep in a bed
This one is real simple - you just need to bind yourself to a bed, like you did with the bedroll earlier. You don't even need to be the one who made or placed the bed, if the person who placed it is in your tribe. If you need to make your own bed, you'll want the Bedshaper feat on the Survival page. There are several beds to choose from.
“ | You crafted a bed to give yourself a permanent place to sleep. Not to mention the added benefit of being off the ground, where the snakes and spiders can crawl in. | „ |
Craft an iron tool
Requires you to unlock the Iron Tools feat on the Survival page and then craft either an Iron Pick or Iron Hatchet. Both of these require a Blacksmith's Bench to craft.
“ | You have successfully crafted a iron tool. You admire the heft and feel of it in your hands. Trees and rocks beware - you are coming for them. | „ |
Obtain a potion
There are many potions in the game and many ways to acquire them (crafting, looting, trading). If you want to craft a Potion, the easiest choice is to unlock the Firebowl Cauldron feat on the Survival page. You can use this to craft Aloe Extract which is a really useful healing potion that can be used whilst in combat and only requires 10x Aloe Leaves to craft. Don't forget that, like many crafting stations, the cauldron requires Fuel.
“ | You gulp down the potion and let the effects spread slowly throughout your body. For all you know, it might all be in your mind. It's just nice not to be drinking water for once. | „ |
Show your religious zeal
That shrine that you built in Chapter III - you'll unlock this journey step very soon after by crafting the gathering item on that shrine and generating a Manifestation of Zeal for your God. These gathering weapons should be used on dead exiles to harvest an item of religious significance from them.
“ | Your rudimentary acts of zealotry were enough to create physical manifestations of the favor of the gods on the altar. With enough favor, who knows what is possible? | „ |
Mine all the iron in a node
If you've got to Chapter IV, you've most likely already done this, but if not - find an iron node and hit it with your pick until it explodes (you have harvested all of the Ironstone from it and the journey step will unlock.
“ | You found and harvested an iron deposit in the world and you are certain that you can identify more of them in the future. It is time to move beyond stone and start working with iron. | „ |
Dye an item
You can obtain different colors of Dye by looting npcs or chests, or by crafting Dye in a Firebowl Cauldron. To use Dye on a location of armor, select the armor and you'll see a button for Dye.
“ | You look at the colors of your new item. The dye seems to have taken and the clothing seems as robust as ever. You also look good. | „ |
Catch a fish
Build a Fish Trap and place it partially submerged into water and wait for a bit until there is a fish in there.
“ | Your first fish lies dead at your feet. The lifeless eyes stare up at you accusingly but it was you or it. Perhaps not, but regrets are for the weak. | „ |
Plant seeds
There's a couple of things you need to do to successfully plant Seeds: - Build and place a Compost Heap and then add Putrid Meat, Plant Fiber, and Bonemeal into it. Over time it will create Compost. - Place a Crude Planter and then add Compost plus any type of Seeds. Seeds can be gathered from most bushes.
“ | Tamping down the earth over your first planted seed, you feel a sense of satisfaction. It might not be as glorious as slaying enemies in battle, but there is a certain pleasure in growing something of your own. | „ |
Earn a perk
Perks are earned every 10 points of each Attribute. As an example, when your Vitality reaches 10, you gain the perk, "Deep Breath"
“ | You're certain that what you have figured out will help you to survive for longer. Perhaps even give you the edge in a crucial situation. It feels good. | „ |
Chapter V[]
Craft an exceptional or flawless item
When you have added a suitable tier 3 or 4 Thrall to a Blacksmith's Bench or Armorer's Bench, it may allow you to craft Exceptional or Flawless versions of some armor types, such as Exceptional Iron Mace or Flawless Heavy Pauldron. To unlock this journey step, craft one of those weapons or armor pieces.
“ | Ah there it is. That undeniable quality of craftsmanship that separates the novice from the master. You marvel at the little details that you would never have thought to include and, most importantly, the extra power that imparts. You're looking forward to testing this out. | „ |
Destroy the Abyssal Remnant

The location of The Dregs dungeon entrance

The Dregs dungeon entrance from the outside
The Abysmal Remnant can be found at the end of The Dregs - a dungeon located at the very Western end of the River.
To enter, you need to shed the blood of another human on the patterned stonework. Lure an enemy exile into the room and kill them on the stonework to open the dungeon.
- Make sure to take a bow and plenty of arrows with you, to shoot the puzzle gongs in this dungeon.
- You will encounter Komodos and Skeletons inside.
- The Abysmal Remnant is found in a large pool of acid - do not jump in! There are a number of different strategies - you can kill it with bow and arrows (may need hundreds of arrows) or by luring it from its pool so you can melee it.
“ | You have overcome the Abyssal Remnant and won through The Dregs. Your confidence in yourself grows along with your ability. | „ |
Upgrade a building piece

Three tiers of buildings
Craft a Stonebrick Foundation (tier 2 building) and use it to replace a Sandstone Foundation that you already placed. You can directly replace the existing foundation - you don't need to destroy it first. Note that this means you can design buildings using Sandstone and then, once you're happy with how it works, you can replace the building parts with a higher tier.
“ | You've upgraded a building piece to make it stronger, sturdier and more resistant to attack. Now you simply need to do the rest of the building. | „ |
Obtain the head of a boss creature
Some boss creatures will yield a head, others won't. Typically, the ones that drop skeleton keys don't have a head. Use a Hatchet or Cleaver to harvest the body. Some fairly easy boss creatures that you can get a head from are:
- Shaleback King, located at the South-East of the map, drops Shaleback King Head.
- Elk King, located North of The Shattered Basin, drops Elk King Head.
“ | You have the head and proof of both your prowess and the unnaturally large creatures that haunt the Exiled Lands. Something to remind you to be alert at all times. | „ |
Ride an elevator
Fairly self explanatory, craft and build either a Elevator Vertical or Elevator Horizontal, then place it and use it. Note that completing this step only needs you to use the Elevator, so many players can complete their journey step if one player builds an elevator. If you're only building one to complete the Journey Step, the Elevator Horizontal is easier to place. You can learn to build an Elevator by taking the Elevators feat.
“ | You shake your head as you step off the elevator. Necessity really is the mother of all invention. | „ |
Scout a Black Hand camp

Some of the Black Hand camps
Black Hand camps are mostly found in the North-East of the Desert biome, especially around The Black Galleon.
“ | You shake your head. The rumors were true, a group of pirates stuck in the desert. Interestingly, also wearing the bracelets, marking them as prisoners in the Exiled Lands. You wonder what the Black Hand of Set would think if they knew that a bunch of pirates had stolen their name and were running around the desert. | „ |
Decorate yourself with warpaint
You can learn to craft Decorative Warpaints as a feat, from level 22. The warpaint itself is crafted in the Firebowl Cauldron.
“ | In the beginning, the paint feels odd against your skin, but you know that over time you will become used to it. Oddly satisfied with your freshly patterned skin, you move onwards with a bounce in your stride. | „ |
Fire a trebuchet

A completed Trebuchet
Another fairly self-explanatory step. The Trebuchet is unlocked by learning the Engineer Feat and is crafted and assembled in 4 steps. Craft the Siege Foundation and Trebuchet Base at your Carpenter's Bench. Place the Siege Foundation somewhere (make sure that you raise it vertically a little, otherwise the rest of the trebuchet may not build). Next, place the Trebuchet Base on top of the Siege Foundation. You can now use the Trebuchet Base as if it were a workbench, to craft a Trebuchet Frame and then a Trebuchet Arm. Finally, to fire the completed Trebuchet, you need to add some weighting ballast (Stone will do fine), craft a Siege Boulder and then fire the Trebuchet!
“ | The payload arcs through the sky and lands with a satisfying thump. You're certain that simple walls won't be able to stand up to the pounding of such a machine. War is coming and you are prepared. | „ |
Combine orb effects
Equip and throw a Grease Orb at some scenery, then equip and throw a Demon-fire Orb, to hit the patch of grease that you can see. The result should be the journey step unlocking and a fire burning for a while.
If you haven't been lucky enough to loot these orbs, then you'll need to craft them in your Firebowl Cauldron.
Note that you should use right-click to throw these, so they smash on impact.
“ | You're not sure how it works, but it works. And now you know a new trick to use against your enemy. | „ |
Climb the Tower of Bats
The Tower of Bats can be a fairly tricky climb, so make sure you're only wearing Light Armor. Climbing Gloves and Climbing Boots will also help. The tower is found South-East of The Unnamed City, across the River. It's pretty tall and easy to spot if you're in the right area.
“ | You heave a heavy sigh as you pull yourself over the edge of the Tower of Bats. Time to find out if this place anything of value to you at all. | „ |
Chapter VI[]
Use an explosive
Place an Explosive Jar on the ground, then interact with it to activate the timer fuse. You probably want to run away as soon as you have done this! Note that if you detonate the explosive by shooting a fire arrow at it, you won't unlock this journey step!
“ | The satisfying boom of the explosion still rings in your ears. The raw power of the powder is enough to smash walls and bring down forts and castles. Oh, the destruction you will leave in your wake. | „ |
Modify a weapon
Unlock the Apprentice Weaponsmith feat from the weapons page. This allows you to make several weapon modifications at the Tinker's Bench, such as Simple Reinforcement Kit or Simple Weapon Damage Kit. Make one of these and then drag it onto a weapon to modify that weapon. Note that the weapon must be fully repaired to do this.
“ | Your newly modified weapon still feels familiar, but subtly different. You won't be certain until you try it in combat, but you're looking forward to. | „ |
Scout a Dogs of the Desert camp

Map location of The Den
The Dogs of the Desert camps are situated at, and around, The Den in the North-West of the Desert biome.
“ | The Dogs of the Desert were as aggressive as their name implies - attacking you on sight. Still, there was something animalistic about their features. As if they weren't truly men at all - they were just wearing the mask. | „ |
Lure an enemy into a trap
This is accomplished using an Exploding Trap or Vapor Trap and getting an opponent (either player or npc) caught in the explosion. It works like a land mine after it is placed. Something to be aware of is that the explosion has a delay of several seconds from when it is triggered, so the player/npc that triggered it may have moved out of the area of effect. I found the best way to guarantee this journey step triggering is to stand next to the trap, so you get hit by it as well, or to place it and get a friend to stand on it (even works on PvE).
“ | There is absolute delight in watching a plan execute itself perfectly. In this case, the trap worked flawlessly, triggered by the weight of the attacker it fired off with devastating effect. | „ |
Modify a piece of armor
Unlock the Apprentice Armorsmith feat from the armor page.
This allows you to make several armor modifications at the Tinker's Bench, such as Thin Armor Plating. Make one of these and then drag it onto a piece of armor to modify that armor piece.
Note that you don't need to make the modification yourself to unlock this journey step, you can use a modification made by someone else.
“ | Your armor still creaks and groans, but somehow, it all feels slightly better. And you've learned how to modify your armor, which your certain is a useful skill to have. | „ |
Squish something in a fluid press
There are a number of things you can squish in a Fluid Press to trigger this journey step, such as Desert Berries, Coal, fish from a Fish Trap, or the head of an animal. The press can squish many things!
“ | With a sickly gurgle, the fluid press squeezes pungent liquid into the world. You're becoming quite efficient at producing things, even if it is mostly just bad smells. | „ |
Drink water from a well
If your base isn't near water, then building and placing a Water Well is a worthwhile investment. It also allows you to unlock this journey step.
Note that you can fill a Sealed Waterskin from a well.
“ | You wipe your mouth with your hand. The water tastes a little brackish, but is drinkable. One of the great threats of the Exiled Lands, thirst, is thus overcome. | „ |
Cripple an enemy
The Cripple Status effect is typically inflicted with Heavy Attacks from a sword.
“ | You grin mercilessly as you watch your enemy limping away. There'll be no escape for them this time. | „ |
Sunder an enemy
The Sunder Status effect is typically inflicted with Heavy Attacks from Hammers.
“ | Your deft moves and crushing attacks left your foe exposed and off-balance. From that position it was simple to exploit the weakness. You tuck this technique into your mind for future reference. | „ |
Make an enemy bleed
The Bleeding Status effect is typically inflicted with Heavy Attacks from paired daggers.
“ | You watch with satisfaction as your enemy drips blood onto the sand. Sadistic, yes? But then again, they should never have tried to kill you. You store your knowledge of enemy anatomy for future battles. | „ |
Chapter VII[]
Survive a sandstorm outside of shelter
To trigger this it seems that you need to be standing outside when a Sandstorm starts and take at least one tick of damage from it.
The safest way to trigger this journey step is to craft, or loot, a Sandstorm Breathing Mask and equip it as soon as you have taken one tick of damage from a Sandstorm.
“ | You've stood unharmed during the course of the sandstorm. As the fury of the sands whipped around you, you stood tall, protected by your ingenuity. You feel that, finally, you have faced the harshest of what the Exiled Lands can throw at you. | „ |
Explore the Unnamed City

Section of the map showing the Unnamed City
The Unnamed City is a darker orange color on the map than the rest of the Desert biome and easily spotted by the massive, black walls. You don't need to go very far inside the walls to trigger this and, in some places, can trigger it from outside of the walls. Be careful if exploring further, as areas of the city are patrolled by animated Skeletons and Dragons.
“ | You have seen the empty boulevards and shattered streets of the ancient city of the Giant-kings. The places where they held their human slaves, performed their sorcerous rituals, and even the archives where they keep the entire knowledge of their race. And the corruption of the ancient city yet lingers on your mind, clinging like a thin layer of grease to your consciousness. | „ |
Survive a Purge
Be present, in a Clan, when The Purge occurs and targets that clan. The Purge is a clan-based mechanic, so if you are not in a clan, it will not trigger for you.
I believe that you actually need to get involved in fighting the attackers for this to work, but as long as you don't die and the attackers are all killed, then this journey step will unlock.
“ | The battle was bloody and the screaming horde were intense in their desire to see your home destroyed. But you overcame. You won again. That is all that matters. | „ |
Destroy a Dragon

Surviving a dragon fight takes patience
Find a Dragon and kill it! The easiest dragons are found in The Unnamed City, with smaller ones in The Spawning Pools to the West of the city. the recommended strategy is to find a Dragon Hatchling as it also counts for this step.
Like many large monsters in this game, the Dragon telegraphs its attacks, so you can see them coning and block or dodge in time. The fight is significantly easier in heavy armor with a decent shield.
“ | You stand above the broken body of your foe and feel only exhaustion. That was one of the most difficult fights of your life and you salute the creature who gave it to you. You realize that you are now entitled to call yourself, Dragonslayer. | „ |
Visit Sepermeru

Map showing the location in the game world
Also known as The Relic Hunter City, Sepermeru, City of the Relic Hunters can be found in the Savanna biome, far West of the Desert area of the map. It is a largely neutral city where you can trade with Merchants. There are also numerous Thralls here that you can capture.
“ | You found Sepermeru and the rumors were true, the inhabitants did not attack you at first sight. You've found a cure for perhaps one of the greatest threats of the Exiled Lands, loneliness. | „ |
Attune an Obelisk
There are many Obelisks situated around the map - they are easily spotted as they are large, black rock and have a purple cloud effect around them that causes you to gain corruption when near it.
To attune to one, run up to it and interact with it.
You can now use a Map Room to teleport to that Obelisk.
“ | When you touched your bracelet to the obelisk, the patterns inscribed upon it seem to burn themselves into your mind. Along with something... darker. You hope that whatever has hidden itself in the back of your mind will be useful. | „ |
Create a map-room

The map room is just slightly larger than six foundations in diameter.
It's important to note that this journey step triggers from placing a Map Room rather than crafting it. The Map Room can also be picked up to your inventory and re-placed, allowing everyone in a Clan to gain this journey step from crafting a single Map Room.
Before you can craft a Map Room you need to learn how to from The Archivist in The Archives.
Note that, to place a Map Room, you need a flat area that is at least 7x7 foundations in size.
“ | You've reproduced the map room from the ancient ruins with a precise level of detail. Now you can see an overview of the lands that the Giant-kings once ruled and, if The Archivist was correct, even access their sorcerous system of travel. | „ |
Recruit a unique thrall
Hopefully you have a fair few Thralls by now, enhancing your workshop and guarding your base. To trigger this journey step, you need to capture and convert a Named Thrall on the Wheel of Pain and place it on the ground (Fighter, Archer, Entertainer), or grow a Greater version of any animal in an Animal Pen.
“ | Your new ally, known far and wide for their skills, gets quietly to work. You're satisfied to have such a skilled person on your side. Willing or not. | „ |
Equip a Raider Armor Piece
Either find/borrow a location, or make some at the Armorer's Bench. To craft yourself, learn the Raider Armors feat (Level 30 armors).
“ | You like the feel of your new armor. It makes you dangerous. And fearless. Like you'd like to go on a raid. | „ |
Cleanse corruption by watching an entertainer
There are three steps required to unlock this journey step:
- Capture an Entertainer Thrall, break them in a Wheel of Pain, and place in your base.
- Gain Corruption from being near an Obelisk or in the Unnamed City.
- Stand near the Entertainer in your base to remove the Corruption.
Note - you can skip capturing your own entertainer and view the entertainers in the bar, in Sepermeru, City of the Relic Hunters.
“ | You feel refreshed, like you've awoken from a dark dream. The menacing clouds on your consciousness have lifted. You are restored. | „ |
Chapter VIII[]
Visit New Asagard

The location of New Asagarth on the map

View from outside of New Asagarth.
New Asagarth is a large, circular Vanir settlement in the Highlands area of the map.
Note that the journey step refers to it as "New Asagard" but the map shows it as New Asagarth.
“ | You've found the walled village known as New Asagard - but the locals were less than happy to see you. Unlike Sepermeru, it seems that strangers are particularly unwelcome in the village of these brutes. | „ |
Defeat the Kinscourge

Location of The Black Keep on the map.
The Kinscourge is located in The Black Keep, in the Frozen Northlands of the Snow biome (see map). The Black Keep is a huge, maze-like structure with many undead warriors to fight before you reach The Kinscourge.
Wear good heavy armour for this fight, though many of his attacks are avoidable with dodge or block. There are additional skeletons in the room that The Kinscourge can be found in, but he can be fought without them joining in.
Once you are victorious, there are six lorestones that can be clicked on, each of which will teach you some crafting knowledge:
You will need to be level 60 to be able to learn these.
“ | You sheathe your weapon and look upon the corpse of the creature that you have just slain. Man, spirit or something else? All you know is that this tragedy, played out over ten thousand years, was ended by decisive action. Your action. | „ |
Get extremely drunk
You need to drink FIVE alcoholic drinks to get drunk enough to trigger this journey step. This is also enough to give you alcohol poisoning and a fairly lengthy buff of +3 Strength and +3 Vitality (the alcohol poisoning debuff can be cleared using a Set Antidote from the Set shrine). There are many alcoholic drinks in Conan: Exiles and you can loot them from various opponents or chests, as well as make them using a Fermentation Barrel.
“ | Your head hurts too much for you to think of a benefit to this. You're certain there was one but... you just want some greasy food. | „ |
Enter the Palace of the Witch Queen
Situated in the Eastern side of the Jungle zone - this is a reasonably obvious entrance to an instanced dungeon. Once inside, it's a brief walk forward before you encounter The Witch Queen herself. You do NOT need to fight her to complete this journey step.
If you do decide to fight her, you must first defeat her giant statue guards - watch out for the pew pew lazer beams!
“ | The Palace of the Witch Queen was not what you expected, but you have uncovered treasure of a different sort. You think it is going to work out just fine. | „ |
Drink the Yellow Lotus Potion
When you drink a Yellow Lotus Potion it will instantly refund all of your attribute points and Feats. You can make this potion at the Firebowl Cauldron. Yellow Lotus Blossom are found across much of the map and can be harvested by walking up to them and interacting with them - using a Sickle will improve yields.
“ | Infinities explode before your eyes. The world spins and turns. You see yourself as a child, an adolescent, an adult. You see every road you never turned down, every path untrodden and with a flick of the wrist, you can change it all. You can become something else entirely. | „ |
Harvest the Black Lotus Blossom

Location of The Black Garden.
Black Lotus Flower can be found growing in a place called The Black Garden in the Eastern part of the Jungle zone, amidst broken temples populated by gorillas.
“ | Holding the blossom carefully away from your face, you smile triumphantly. Another challenge overcome and another mystery of this place conquered. | „ |
Discover all the Lemurian Lorestones
Visit all of the Lemurian Lorestones and interact with them.
These stones have a specific look that distinguishes them from other, similar devices.
“ | The tale of how the Lemurians came to the Exiled Lands - the sinking of their homeland in the cataclysm, their forced enslavement by the vicious people who captured them as they made landfall - strikes a chord with you. And yet... you don't fully trust the words spoken by the stone. There is another side to this story. | „ |
Harvest a fallen star for ore
First off it's important to note that this unlocks from adding Star Metal Ore to your inventory. This means that you can earn this by looting the ore off fallen monsters or by taking it from a box in your base. You may need to do this the hard way though and find a node of Star Metal and harvest it - this requires Explosives.
Star Metal Ore is harvested from meteorites that fall in the Western region of the Snow biome. You will see them trail across the sky, and hear their explosive boom as they crash land on the mountain ridges. You must destroy the outer shell of the meteorite with Explosives before you can harvest it.
“ | You have a gleaming lump of star-metal ore, ready to be smelted into a weapon or tool. You want to see what it can do. | „ |
Build or Upgrade your building to the highest tier
Learn the Master Mason feat from the Construction page, then craft either a Reinforced Stone Foundation or Black Ice-Reinforced Wooden Foundation and place it. Note that to unlock this journey step you don't need to be the one making the building part, just place it, so someone else can craft the building part for you.
“ | You've begun to turn your home into a fortress. Raiders and enemies will need to be very determined indeed if they hope to break down your walls. You almost hope they try. | „ |
Discover what haunts the Sanctuary Ruins

Map showing the location of Sanctuary Ruins.
Sanctuary Ruins are at the top of an island in a large lake at the East side of the Highlands zone. This is an easy one to get, as there is little peril there and you just need to get to the top. There is also a lot of the backstory for the game here!
“ | You found the spirit of Telith in the Sanctuary Ruins, and listened as she sang her lament for her lost lover, Tyros. There is a greater nuance and mystery to the story of the Kinscourge than you had imagined. | „ |
Chapter IX[]
Visit the Mounds of the Dead

Map showing the location of Mounds of the Dead.
The Mounds of the Dead are in the Western half of the Tundra zone. As well as Cimmerian thralls, you may encounter tough undead creatures here.
“ | You've walked the ancient battlefield of the Exiled Lands. You've seen the grave mounds rising in the mist. You've seen the lost souls of the warriors who fell, wandering the graves with a nameless, timeless hunger. You've seen the Mounds of the Dead. But what has it taught you? | „ |
Defeat the Barrow King

The location of The Barrow King entrance

The Barrow King entrance from the outside
The Barrow King is located in the far West of the Tundra biome (see the map), behind a large, round, locked door. To open the door, you need to have at least 1 Demon Blood in your inventory.
The fight itself is fairly simple in nature, though decent armor & weapons are advised.
Once you kill the Barrow King, there is a stone tablet where you can learn how to make Kingslayer Polearm and Kingslayer Daggers.
“ | The Barrow King, also known as the Priestking, member of the Giant-king triumvirate, lies dead at your feet. You are not sure whether all that you find in his tomb is unvarnished truth, or whether it is indeed tainted by his alien perspective, but it give you more knowledge of events in the Exiled Lands than you had before. You feel as though the mystery is starting to unravel. | „ |
Obtain a Black Ice Weapon

Location on the map of The Temple of Frost.
Black Ice Weapons can be crafted at the Frost Temple Smithy within The Temple of Frost, in the Northern area of the Snow biome.
Another method is to upgrade a shrine of Ymir to tier 3 and forge one of the weapons there, such as Glacier Crack.
You don't need to make one to unlock this journey stage, just move one to your inventory, so you can borrow one from someone else.
“ | You heft your new weapon, proud of the combination of balance and power throbbing through the haft. You must admit, however, that you dislike the slow burning cold that seeps into your skin from the weapon itself. | „ |
Buff yourself with Warpaint
Learn the feat Functional Warpaints from the Armor page, then craft and use one of them in the Firebowl Cauldron. Be aware that they are reasonably expensive to create and are lost if you die. Each warpaint grants +3 to a specific Attribute.
“ | You can feel the paint tingling upon your skin. And you feel the effect in your blood, roaring through your veins. It works. That is all that matters | „ |
Summon Witchfire
This one is pretty easy compared to most of this chapter. You need to add either a Witchfire Wall Torch or a Witchfire Standing Torch to your inventory to unlock this journey step - it doesn't matter who made it. These torches are crafted at the Artisan's Worktable and require Witchfire Powder which is made at the Firebowl Cauldron, from Glowing Essence and Brimstone.
“ | Your witchfire burns blue against the night, a flickering flame that gives off little smoke and casts a harsh light on the landscape. Looking down, you can see that your shadow is gone. | „ |
Pour Boiling Oil from a Siege Cauldron
This took more figuring than it should. The Siege Cauldron can be learned from the Master Construction area of feats. To place it, you need to first place a crenelation along the edge of a ceiling (needs Master Fence-maker feat). The Siege Cauldron will then snap to the crenelation.
You then need to access the inventory of the placed Siege Cauldron and add Tar (not oil).
Lastly, interact with the handle and it will tip 1 of that tar over the edge, slightly damaging any foes below.
“ | You survey the slick patch of oil left on the wall proudly. This will hinder anyone silly enough to climb the walls. You look forward to them trying. | „ |
Maintain normal temperature in the most Extreme Cold

Map showing the location of Bridge of the Betrayer.
The easiest way I found to unlock this is to find an area of Extreme Cold that is next to an area that isn't very cold at all. You then simply run into the Extremely Cold zone.
I found that the Bridge of the Betrayer worked well for this (see map). I also wore armour with cold resistance and ate some Spiced Haunch to get my warmth up before running across the bridge.
“ | You shake the frost from your clothing and look at your icy skin. You didn't feel any discomfort at all. You've conquered another aspect of this place. | „ |
Defeat Hrugnir of the Frost

Location on the map of The Temple of Frost.
Hrugnir can be found guarding the Frost Temple Smithy within The Temple of Frost. He has two other Frost Giants with him, so you'll be fighting three targets - beware, as they all have massive two-handed axes and love to knock their targets over.
“ | You found and defeated Hrugnir of the Frost. And while you found no sign of a bracelet on his corpse, you are still certain that the Frost Giants are tied to this place in the same way as the other Exiles. You're just not certain why. | „ |
Equip a Nordheimer Armor Set
Simply unlock the Nordheimer Armors feat to allow you to craft the Vanir armor sets.
“ | The new armor pleases you and simply for the warmth that it imparts. It also looks really good. | „ |
Discover all the Giant-king obelisks
It is believed that these are the more rounded lore stones.
“ | The lorestones of the Giant-kings contained echoes of their culture and their attitude. You're not certain you will ever understand how such ancient creatures thought, and the reasoning behind their actions. But you understand that their history is the key to your freedom. | „ |
Chapter X[]
Find a Legendary weapon
To unlock this you need to add a Legendary Item to your inventory. It can be one that belongs to someone else. To gain a Legendary Weapon, you should defeat one of the many Legendary Creatures (huge-sized beasts) that can be found around the map (Giant Crocodiles, Spiders, Rhino etc) and loot a Skeleton Key from them. Near to the huge beast will be a chest that can only be opened with a Skeleton Key - inside each chest you will discover a Legendary Item. An alternative method is to craft a legendary weapon! The Kingslayer Polearm and Kingslayer Daggers both count as legendary weapons and the recipes can be learned from The Barrow King.
“ | You hold a legendary weapon in your hands and while it feels good, you have a doubt. Can you be worthy of its legacy? Time will tell. | „ |
Destroy whatever dwells at the heart of the Volcano
Destroy The Degenerate within The Well of Skelos.
As of February 5th, 2022, The Degenerate can bug out and simply disappear after the player defeats all of his shadows, not completing the Journey step Destroy whatever dwells at the heart of the Volcano. It is unknown if this bug can happen both in offline and online sessions. This can potentially be solved by exiting the area of the boss fight far enough for him to respawn and then heading back in. Caution is advised, as doing this will restart the boss fight from the beginning.
“ | The Degenerate, ancient enemy of mankind, lies dead in the ruins of his city. Such a creature knew nothing but deceit and contempt for other living things. The Giant-kings were fools to trust it, the Lemurians were fools to believe that it revealed itself to them willingly. Now, you wipe the ichor of its passing from your blade and stride forth from the ruins. It will never attempt to rule from the shadows again. | „ |
Obtain an Obsidian Weapon
This journey step is unlocked when you move an Obsidian Weapon into your inventory. To craft Obsidian Weapons you need to learn the recipe.
“ | You have a weapon made of the dark glassy substance known as Obsidian. You have no doubt it will shatter quickly under repeated stress, but until then it is a smooth and welcome weight in your hands. | „ |
Create a Master Workstation
The top tier of workstations are all named "Improved <name>" rather than master. As of 30th April 2018, the only workstation that you can craft to unlock this journey step is the Improved Stove.
“ | You stand proudly beside your master workstation. This, as much as your combat prowess, is proof that you have come to dominate the Exiled Lands. You have become so much more than you were. | „ |
Summon the Avatar of a God
You require a tier 3 Priest Thrall or Unique Thrall for your tier 3 shrine to be able to undertake the summoning of an Avatar.
“ | For a brief moment, you soared! You saw through the eyes of a god and smote those who opposed you with the wrath of a deity. Such power coupled with a glimpse of infinity. There is no greater domination! | „ |
Survive the heat of the volcano
“ | Steam rises from your skin and your armor crinkles in the extreme heat. But you, you felt nothing out of the ordinary. You consider this challenge conquered. | „ |
Equip an Epic Armor Set
At this time, there is no minimum level for wearing epic armour, so borrow from a friend if you can and get the XP for completing this step. To make your own epic armour:
- Place an Improved Armorer's Bench.
- Craft the epic armor (purple corners on the icon) from that bench.
“ | You smile as you clamber about in your new armor. Your alterations have made it far more effective and yet it still retains the visual and cultural flair that it had earlier. You are very pleased with yourself. | „ |
Explore the entire Exiled Lands
Simple in concept, but time consuming to undertake. You need to discover every Location on the Map. (It is possible that even though you have visited every location on the map, the achievement will not be granted. The reason for this issue is that there is a hidden location outside the boundaries of the area that is explorable in normal gameplay and exploring that location completes the missing step that triggers the achievement. The location is called "Non" and it is the place where the crucified player encounters Conan during the intro scene. To reach this location, you will need to activate the admin console and use the "TeleportPlayer -305963 312069 88" admin command. Obviously, on the official servers you cannot do that -- players who are unable to complete this achievement in online gameplaye will need to wait for Funcom to provide a fix for this issue.)
“ | You have found every single location of interest within the Exiled Lands. You've been everywhere that there is to go, seen every vista and visited every scene. You are the ultimate explorer. | „ |
Defeat the Mummy of the Ring
“ | You have destroyed the servant of Thoth Amon and recovered the essence of the Serpent Ring of Set from its body. You now have a single final act to perform to remove your bracelet and leave the Exiled Lands forever. | „ |
Escape the Exiled Lands
Be warned in advance that leaving the Exiled Lands is the end of playing your current character.
“ | You walk from the Exiled Lands into the desert. Behind you, the cursewall crumbles. And with every step, the world fades until..."So then, you're not quite dead." | „ |
