Fire is the first marker along the journey to civilization. Heat, light and the ability to cook food is the first shaky step upwards from the bowels of primal savagery.
This torch is a loose bundle of plant leavings wrapped around the end of a scavenged branch. It can be used to light the surroundings or to fend off creatures frightened of fire, but it will burn quickly and break easily.
