Conan Exiles is a survival game developed and published by Funcom, set in the brutal lands of Conan the Barbarian and based upon the writings of Robert E. Howard. The events in Conan Exiles take place on Conan's timeline between the stories Xuthal of the Dusk (The Slithering Shadow) and A Witch Shall be Born (following the Dark Storm chronology).[2]

In January 2016, Funcom announced it was working on Conan Exiles, an open-world survival game based on the Conan the Barbarian brand. The game released on Steam PC Early Access on January 31, 2017 and launched on the Xbox One as part of the Game Preview program in August. At the end of the month, Funcom teamed up with Koch Media/Deep Silver, which handles physical retail for all three platforms since the full release.[3] The game was finally released in physical retail on April 24, 2018[4] and digitally, for all platforms simultaneously, on May 8, 2018.

On April 27, 2018 Spike Chunsoft and H2 Interactive were revealed to release Conan Exiles digitally and in retail in Japan, Korea and several other territories in Asia. On August 23, 2018 Spike Chunsoft released a separate PlayStation 4 version in Japan titled Conan Outcasts (Japanese: コナン アウトキャスト).[5][6]

You are an Exile, one of thousands cast out to fend for yourself in a wasteland swept by terrible sandstorms and besieged on every side by Enemies. Here you must fight to survive, build and dominate.

Hungry, thirsty and alone, your first battle is against the harsh environment. Grow crops or Hunt animals for food. Harvest Resources to build Weapons and Tools. Build a shelter to survive. Ride across a vast world and explore alone, or band together with other players to build entire Settlements and Strongholds to withstand fierce invasions.

When strong enough, march into battle and wage war against your enemies to dominate the Exiled Lands. Sacrifice enemy players on the altars of the gods and shift the balance of power your way. Unleash your fury in savage, fast-paced combat and execute bloody and bone-crushing attacks that will see heads rolling and limbs flying.

Survive. Build. Dominate. Play alone in single-player mode, or forge alliances and make enemies online on both public and private servers. Will you dominate the Exiled lands, or will your enemies sacrifice you on the altar of their god?

Conan Exiles was released on May 8, 2018 and is no longer available to pre-order. There are different pre-order incentives for digital and retail versions of the game.

Digital pre-orders[]

The digital pre-orders, as well as existing owners of the Early Access or Game Preview version, will receive -upon redeeming a code- an in-game Conan's Royal Armor.

Physical pre-orders[]

The physical pre-orders will receive -upon redeeming a code- an in-game Icon atlantean 2h sword Conan's Atlantean Sword, limited to the Day One Edition of the game. The Day One Edition also contains a full-color printed map of the world of Conan Exiles.

Conan Exiles Wiki is focused on creating the definitive guide to Conan Exiles. But while we make an effort to be complete, we are not an official game support channel.
Funcom does not provide classic MMORPG bug/issue-tracking. Instead, reports may be made through the forums and using several report forms.

Originally, support tickets for all Funcom games, including Conan Exiles, went through the Support page on Funcom's website. However, this is no longer the case and it is now only used for issues with the company itself.

Reception[]

  • 480.000 units were sold during the first month of Early Access and 1 million units1 across all platforms during Early Access. In total the game sold more than 1.4 million units1 including retail sell-in before the May 24, 2018 Q1 presentation.

Notes[]

Conan Exiles has brutal combat where you can cut off limbs and heads of human opponents and blood is shown frequently. Players may choose to play the game with either no, partial or full nudity enabled. This is possible in both single and multiplayer.

  • Below is a list of age ratings per region and their respective organisations.
    • US: M (17+, ESRB); Blood and Gore, Nudity, Language, Use of Alcohol, Intense Violence, Online Interactions Not Rated by the ESRB
      • In the US, full nudity is disabled by default.[17][18]
    • EU: 18 (18+, USK and PEGI); Violence
    • JP: Z (18+, CERO)
      • For the Japanese version, the title has been changed to Conan Outcasts for various reasons. In addition, the developers removed the functions and effects which the screening organizations define as banned expressions:
        • The semi-naked setting (the female character's chest exposure expression). (Even if you remove all the equipment, both men and women will wear the minimum clothes.)
        • The option in character creation to set the size of male characteristics.
        • The male characteristics drawn on some monsters.
        • Other Gore expressions are the same as the PlayStation 4 version released overseas.
    • AU: MA (18+, ACB)
    • NZ: R16 (16+, OFLC)
    • AS, SA and other regions (18+, DJCTQ)
On Xbox, full nudity comes with the free Nudity DLC and is only available for the digital editions that are indicated in the store page and if you're in a region that allows for it. For physical copies, whether the full nudity option is available or not depends on the region of the purchased disk.[19]

On PS4, there is no Nudity DLC available; US regions disks only support partial nudity, whereas UK and Oceanic regions both support full nudity on PS4.
There is no region lock on PS4, so users are able to purchase disks from other countries and play them on their console, unlocking full nudity. Using a disk from a different region than the one your account is created in will restrict your access to the PSN store and you will not be able to purchase any DLC. However, the region specific disks install separately on your PS4, allowing you to play with full nudity on one disk and purchase DLC from the store on another disk.
  • By September 17, 2018 there were 1159 official servers available over all regions and platforms.[20] At launch there were only 225.[21] They are not moderated, because there are no monthly subscriptions or paid in-game shops to provide the necessary manpower and infrastructure.[22]
  • There are over 20,000 dedicated servers hosted by players themselves.[23]
  • Linux is not supported, but the game is compatible with it. For setting up a dedicated server with Linux, see Dedicated Server Setup: Linux and Wine.
  • There are no plans for a Nintendo Switch port[24] or VR support.[25] Splitscreen support on consoles will not be added,[26]. Cross-platform has been considered, but at the moment it is not technically feasible for the developers to implement it.[27]
  • Consoles receive the same content as PC. However, some features (e.g. text chat) are not available, as they either already exist as platform feature or are not feasible on consoles.[citation needed]
    • The developers did not have time to optimize for console, which is why it only runs at 1440p even though they initially said it would run in 4K.[28][citation needed]
  • Conan Exiles' Early Access was planned for September 13, 2016[29] but was delayed two weeks later due to sufficient feedback, expectations and additional funding for the studio.[30] The Xbox Game Preview was planned for Spring 2017, but was postponed to Q3 2017 (later August 16, 2017). The reason for this is unknown.[31]
  • Italian was not shown on Steam until after May 9.[32]
  • Originally, the PC version did not come with the ESRB edition of the Limited Collector's Edition.[33]
  • Conan Exiles was partly inspired by the European migrant crisis.[34]
The exact details of how Conan Exiles and Age of Conan will connect are not decided yet, but it is our intention to cross promote and encourage players from each game to try out our other games, especially for games within the same IP.

The Vanguards – Are our first line of defense against major bugs and exploits. This is a cross-profession team of designers and coders who are focused on fixing the problems that the community are reporting. If you encounter a shy dev on steam asking you for more information about a bug, it is probably one of the stalwart vanguards.

Terraformers – The Terraformers team is made up of designers and artists working on the next biome for Conan Exiles. Their focus is new content and areas – you have seen the first touches of their work in The Dregs dungeon that we patched just before April. Their primary focus is the new biome and all of the work required for that.

Featurama – The featurama team are focused on the new features that we want to add to the game. This includes mounts, sorcery etc. In addition, they are also heavily focused on further iterating features that already exist in the game, for example, combat. You see their work with every new feature that makes its way into the game (for example dyes and trebuchets) and there is a lot more to come over the coming weeks and months.

The art team – The art team supports all the studio teams with artwork, animations and fx.

  • In older newsletters, the team has been adressed differently. It consisted of several smaller, more specific teams. Individuals from different teams would often work with one another, which likely led to abandoning the concept entirely.
Conan Exiles and future games will use the combination of Unreal Engine 4 (for the frontend/client) and DreamWorld Technology (for the backend/servers).

  • Conan Exiles is Funcom's third game made using Unreal Engine and its first non-experimental implementation. Funcom has made Unreal Engine 4 a soft requirement for future pitched games. In combination with this, they will be using DreamWorld Technology.
    • It is currently not planned to update to a newer Unreal Engine version. This requires a lot of resources.
    • Tether distance will probably not get limited. This is mostly a UE4 limitation. It is definitely not possible for consoles, because of memory constraints.[36][citation needed]Could not find this answer.
  • Denuvo Anti-Tamper, a 3rd-party DRM which provides anti-piracy protection was removed on June 16, 2020.[37]
  • Red Shell, a third-party tool which collected data on players (eg. store country) was removed after full launch.[38]
  • Trailers are made in Oslo, Norway (motion capture) and Uppsala, Sweden (CGI motion capture).[39]
Scott started off with saying that they have been working on Conan Exiles for close to 5 years total now. They plan on continuing to work on Conan Exiles for several more years. The three biggest events for Conan Exiles in terms of player impact was the first EA launch of Conan Exiles, retail launch (May 8th, 2018), and the launch of mounts in December of 2019.

Conan Exiles had its third highest population overall (using internal metric data) with the mount launch. With Covid-19, they are also seeing high numbers from that as well. Conan Exiles is very healthy, Scott says, and they intend to continue working on it for a long time.

  • As of April 2020, the developers plan on continuing to work on Conan Exiles for several more years.
  • Conan Exiles made back its initial development cost during its first week in sales. However, that does not mean that all the money made after that is pure profit, nor that all of it is funneled back into the game. Some of the money was put into the game when the developers saw it was a success, meaning they extended the development time and were able to hire more people. As of October 2018, Funcom is a company with over 100 employees, split across 2 studios, all of whom need to earn a livable wage and about half of them are working on all their games.[41]

Modiphius sourcebook[]

The "Conan Exiles" tie-in sourcebook for Modiphius' 2d20 "Robert E. Howard's Conan: Adventures in an Age Undreamed Of" tabletop roleplaying game is a full-color 112 page hardcover illustrated with concept art and screenshots from Conan Exiles. It adapts adapts areas and gameplay from Conan Exiles and the community development system from "Mutant: Year Zero" to the Hyborian Age. The sourcebook was announced in a press release by Modiphius Entertainment on March 16, 2016.[43]

  11. For Conan Exiles, the sheer size of the world and number of unique meshes populating it meant that memory usage on GPU was always going to be a major bottleneck. Predictably, the biggest usage of VRAM was overwhelmingly textures. Without any clear rules on what textures could be used in what parts of the game world, our lack of an advanced texture streaming system meant we originally had to use extremely low-resolution textures on memory-constrained devices. Granite proved to be an excellent solution to this problem, providing out-of-the-box texture compression and streaming support. In practice, this allowed us to provide high resolution textures on a wide range of hardware, including GPUs with just 1 GB of VRAM. We would not have been able to support the same range of hardware without it, nor offer the same degree of visual fidelity, even on 4 GB+ GPUs.
