Before chimneys, people gathered around firepits built at the center of a structure for warmth. And while smoke could filter through a thatched roof, the danger of rogue sparks was an ever-present threat, and rooms were uncomfortably smokey. The arrival of the chimney allowed smoke to be safely channeled from the hearth through a hole in the wall and to escape through a pipe to the exterior.
