The best battle, they say, is the one you never have to fight. Formidable enough gates make any enemy think twice. Doubt springs up, not only from the scale of the gate itself, but of the size of the occupying army it implies.
Weapons barely chip such an edifice, and even explosive powder is not enough to weaken it in a single blow. Siege weapons or divine intervention are really the only way to bring down structures this strong.
